Use of a Level D Commercial Off-the-Shelf Operating System in Systems with Other Software of Levels C and/or D

Abstract:
A commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) operating system can be accepted to no higher than DO-178B/ED-12B level D or E, when the source code and design information are not available to airborne system developers.  Some applicants have proposed to use a COTS operating system in airborne systems and equipment with multiple software levels.  This paper identifies some of the concerns to be addressed when using a COTS operating system in systems with software of other levels, including level C and/or D software.  See also Notice 8110.92, which addresses the use of COTS software in level D systems.
It should be noted that the approach described in this paper may not be feasible for many systems.  Therefore, the applicant may consider using an operating system developed to satisfy DO-178B/ED-12B objectives.

1.  PURPOSE

This paper identifies some of the concerns that should be addressed when using a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) operating system that has little or no supporting software life cycle data in a system that includes level C and/or D software.  This paper does not address the use of a COTS operating system in systems with level A or B software.  Each application must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to ensure that all safety issues are addressed.  This paper may be used as the basis for a project-specific issue paper.
It should be noted that the approach described in this paper may not be feasible for many systems.  Therefore, the applicant may consider using an operating system developed to satisfy DO-178B/ED-12B objectives.

2.  BACKGROUND

Several applicants and airborne system developers have proposed to use a COTS operating system in their airborne system and equipment.  However, the source code and software life cycle data for COTS operating systems are normally not available to airborne system developers.  FAA Notice 8110.92 (which was based upon a CAST position paper and agreed upon by CAST) provides guidance for how to obtain approval of previously developed software (PDS), including COTS, to level D.  Some applicants and airborne system developers have proposed to use a COTS operating system in systems that include level C and/or D software applications.
